Gammu/Wammu to Sync Your Phone Contacts, Calender, ToDos and Other Details

Some days back I needed to change a phone and needed to take a backup of contact and calander from my Nokia 3110c phone. I am a user of open source Ubuntu OS. Obviously, I started of with search for Nokia PC Suite for Linux, but unfortunately Nokia PC Suite for Linux package is not available as yet. This despite Nokia is such a big handset manufacture and is forraying into the open source mobile computing with Maemo Project. More on this later..

After searching for alternatives on web, I didn’t found any good apps like nokia PC Suite, which lets you do everything with form your Nokia Phone from syncing contacts to running Internet with Modem of the mobile. But still there should be some effective alternatives for this. Then I stumbled across Wammu better known as Wammu/Gammu ( I don’t know its meaning).

Technical Details

Wammu is a program to manage data in your cell phone such as contacts, calendar or messages. It is built on Gammu library, which provides abstraction layer to work with different cell phones from different vendors (including Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung, Siemens, Huawei and others).

Wammu is an is an app build upon Gammu Library. Wammu lets you sync your mobile contacts, todos, messages and calenders in linux and windows. It seamlessly works with many branded phones and their models. You can also send SMS with this program. It can be connected with your PC or laptop with the help of USB cable, Infrared port or Bluetooth.

Phones that support AT commands and IrTC are usually supported by Gammu Library. Symbian phones are not very well supported. There is a comprehensive count of phones that are supported by this Open source program.  A full list of supported phones.

Some Cons

One thing that I did found lacking in this program is using the capability of phone modem to connect to GPRS Internet. There is no interface for doing that thing. Also it got hanged when I was importing my messages. I am sure the open source community is doing something in this regard. As the Linus’ Law goes “given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow

It can be easily downloaded from the The Download repositary includes binaries for both linux and windows, packages for Ubuntu and RPM packages for other linux distros.

All said and done, I found this open source app Gammu-Wammu a life saver. Give it a try.

Please let us know other programs like these which are useful in syncing contacts and doing many other things.
