Before telling about google DNS let me explain to you about what is DNS or Domain Name System. It is basically used in mapping the the domain name or website URL’s to IP addresses. It is kind of a routing table with many entries in it. It is so useful because it very tough to remember 209.191.93.53 but very easy to remember the yahoo.com.
Google public DNS is a good alternative for DNS mapping. It can be very easily configured
Here are some set of instructions
This is what google says about why you require it
The DNS protocol is an important part of the web’s infrastructure, serving as the Internet’s phone book: every time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be performing hundreds of lookups a day.
Using Google public DNS will improve your browsing experience with more speed. It provides you extra layer of security and you get relevant results for your with no redirection. Google Public DNS is a large set of those caching DNS servers placed around the world. You can use this service even if you don’t have a google account.
There are more alternatives to Google public DNS, one of them and popular is openDNS. This service is available both as free and paid versions.
But their are also counter perspectives about how google DNs is not ideal for everyone. To me its a yet another step by google to make web more faster and better place.
