6 Types of Social Network users

People in social networking are now grouped into 6 types.
The 6 types of social network users, according to Future Laboratory’s MySpace 08 as judged by interviewing 1,000 users on Myspace and Facebook based on People, Content,Culture.are:

  • Essentialists (38%): An essentialist uses a social network for basic communication utility, or staying in touch with friends or family.
  • Transumers (28%): These are followers who join groups other people start that are connected with their hobbies and interests.
  • Connectors (10%): These are your viral agents that pass on interesting links and information to their contacts.
  • Collaborators (5%): In the work world, we call them event planners.
  • Scene Breaking (5%): Again, you might call these agents in the non-virtual world. A Scene Breaking user keeps up with new talent on the social networks – bands, writers, actors, models, you name it – and shares it with others in their circle.
  • Netreprenuers (4%): These are people who use social networking sites for making money.

Orkut scrap worm on rampage-How safe is Orkut

Orkut (google) is considered to be a safe social networking site, but a few days back a worm first of its kind has hit orkut. This worm named virus.js has popped-up a question about how safe these social networks are and how can safety be maintained without effecting the openness of these social networks.

Virus.js worm outbreak has hit users of Google’s Orkut network, with 700,000 users becoming infected in the first 24 hours. This outbreak has many similarities with the ‘Samy’ worm on MySpace in 2005. It propagates by sending messages to everyone on the ‘friends’ list of each newly infected user. It demonstrates the power of so-called cross-site scripting attacks (XSS) and runs by appending a malicious piece of JavaScript to the user’s profile. It exploits a loophole in the Google webmaster’s design. The relatively harmless worm appears to use JavaScript and Flash code to create new scrapbook entries on profiles with a New Year’s message in Portuguese before propagating to the victim’s friends. This virus has mainly harmed users of Brazil and Portugal. Luckily it has not hit Indian profile yet.

User doesnot have to click any link for execution,it starts works automatically when the scrapbook-page loads and prompts user to join the community named in portugese as

“Infectados pelo Vírus do Orkut” means “Infected by Virus Orkut.”

It has not caused much harm to users but has spammed orkut heavily.

This is not the first attack on Orkut’s users; Continue reading

Bebo tops social networking charts

Its never ending competition between the social networks.
They compete against each other in terms of traffic, performance, efficiency of platform(for developers),ease of use and functions in them. Now by a recent survey Bebo has top the charts to become the best social network beating the biggest of all its rivals Facebook.

Bebo – which is aimed at 13 to 24-year-olds – was praised for encouraging “responsible networking”, which means users can restrict who sees their information and block unwanted visitors from their site.

Facebook- which is the UK’s most popular social networking site – got an overall score of 74% compared to Bebo at 79%.
These sites were assessed according to ease of use, performance, and the functions which they offered.

Social networking sites are growing in popularity and, as the success of Bebo in our test shows, sites like MySpace and Facebook can’t rest on their laurels if they want to stay in the game.

ComputingWhich? editor Abigail Waraker said.

MySpace received an overall score of 67 percent and Microsoft Windows Live Spaces scored 65 percent.
Is it the end of Facebook’s never ending hype among the usage of social networks.
But I am sure that the future of social networking is bright and we are going to see lots of new things happening in the world of social networks.

Social-networking-aggregators-Focus applications for 2008

More and more new in social networking these days.
Its time to aggregate all your social networks (Facebook,LinkedIN,Myspace,Flickrand more) into a single social networking aggregation sites.Called by most people as Meebo of social networks, these sites are a center of attraction for development and usage both.
These sites will be more and more developed in 2008 as seen by the present trends of
scattered social networks.More and more startups will be developing more social aggregators.

Presently some startups are focusing on identity consolidation, others on messaging consolidation and on tracking friends. Some like Profilefly offer consolidation of multiple things like Profiles, Contacts and Bookmarks.

These startups will be different from openid system of maintaining one profile for all logins at different sites and peopleaggregator which is an API platform to develop our own social networks and do-it-yourself social networking system. Its source code can be downloaded form their site.

Rather than relying on a single community for socializing, individuals often actively seek out a variety of appropriate people and resources for different situations.Recent research data from Compete.com confirms that people are tending to have multiple Social Network Memberships. E.g. 20% of MySpace members are also Facebook Members.

This concept of social aggregators can be understood by this analogy,You might be an amateur photographer sharing tips and getting advice about wide angle lenses on Flickr but for your job related networking/mobility you would depend on LinkedIn. If some of your good friends from high school are on MySpace while the grad school folks went to Facebook you now have 4 Social Networks to Manage! Thats why my predication that tools for helping users manage their memberships across Social Networks will emerge focus apps for 2008.

Give in your opinions about the advantage of these applications in comments and if you like the post subscribe in below.

Anti-Social-Networking-Sites cool among youngsters

Social networking is heading for a new turnaround here.
Rather than social networking youngsters are also discovering anti social networking.and what do they do there? Mock each other, hurl sarcasm at people they dislike or just vent out their anger for the things they do not feel correct.

SN-Sites like isolatr.com which “helps you to find places where other people are not”. Introvertster “Introvertster is an online community that prevents stupid people and friends from harrassing you online”. Hatebook.com which sounds like facebook helps you hate anything you like with the likeminded. Ifuckinghateyou.com -”your enemy’s enemy is your friend”.
These anti-social-networks provide youngsters with the platform of doing these anti social activities.

The hate can be anything from political personalities (George Bush) and celebrities to anything from girls, boys, food, guys, music, parents, sex, work, clothes, life, people, college, money, sleep,
fat, drugs etc. These sites seem to be relevant and real to many youngsters because they instead of having to be good everytime these sites allow them to show their dislikes for friends and people alike. Its like confession box where they express all their feeling. It works as a relief for them.

These sites do have control, rules and regulations over the abusive language and obscene pictures and follow strict measures by deleting obscene messages.
Overall anti-social-sites are cool among young people.

Hate communities on Orkut

In this time of 2008 apart from many good social networks and good communities there are few communities on orkut and thefacebook which allows people to give vent to their anti-social feelings. These anti-social feelings can be in the form of hostility towards some celebrity or a popular person or just an emotion of hatred or dislike.

Of these there are anti-social communities or rather hate communities for Ekta Kapoor (76,468), Himesh Reshamiya (33,137), Shah Rukh Khan (11,179), Greg Chappell (7,659), Musharraf (1,362) Amitabh Bachchan (1,410) to name a few.The members of these communities are in thousands and increasing day-by-day.Even Mahatma Gandhi,Father of Nation of India has 6,647 members.
Osama-Bin-Laden
shares a community too.We have also heard about the social networking sites banned in some countries which do not put a check on these communities or to the extent they promote hate.China and Korea for example.

This is what the Google Spokesperson has to say about these orkut hate communities.

We take the abuse of Orkut seriously and are constantly developing new tools to review inappropriate content on the site. Orkut users can report content to our reviewers by clicking the ‘report as bogus’ button. There are also tools for community owners to delete posts or topics, ban users and delete anonymous posts

These things are going to increase day by day as if there is a good side there is bad too.
But the google authorities and we people in general have to limit these to an extent that do not prove to be a bad consequence for our world.
